Sightseeing Excursions
The Kathmandu valley synthesizes all of Nepal. The many different races of people from all over the country with their beliefs, cultures, and unique dress have gathered here to make a living. Originally the valley was divided into three kingdoms, Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, and Patan. These three cities have fused together bringing the valley a rich assortment of temples, artisans, crafts, and varied cultures. One could spend days or weeks exploring each one with its religions, history, art, and countless shopping bazaars.

Kathmandu: This is the central city from which the name of the entire valley is derived. The word comes from Kantipur meaning city of glory. This once glorious kingdom hasbeen promulgated as a world heritage site due to its many ancient temples created by skilled artisans over the ages. Visiting these amazing hand carvedbuildings is an experience that relays to you the many colored collage of different beliefs that make up this extravagant city. This shares with the traveler an entirely different feeling for the original civilization. Come visit the many holy sights, historical museums, and bustling market place.

Patan: This ancient city lying about 5km south- east of Kathmandu. The name derives from Lalitpur, which means aritistic place. Patan is famous for being a city of fine arts, filled with archaic, carved Hindu and Buddhist monuments making up a magnificent metropolis of crafts-manship from medieval culture for today's sight- seers. The Newar trive, which resides on the tip of of the Kathmandu basin, has many artisans; one may find workshops of metal works, painting, woodcarving, and so forth. Great for shoppers who want to find art with religious meaning, as well as being known for its many fine carpets. Although most of Nepal is Hindu the Newars, who make up most of the population in patan, are Buddhist. Since the 3rd centurey BC when the King Ahoka erected four great pagodas to the Norht, East, South and West it has preserved the Buddhist Religion.

Bhaktapur: This city is located just 14km out of Kathmandu. Bhakta means one who worships and pur means place. The word originates from Bhadgoan, a holy place of worship where many skilled devotees have left their work in the architecture and other monuments. The residents here are said to have remained with pure faith and a yearning heart towards their religion. Bhaktapuris a town in which its past glory has left a sure imprint on all there is to see. The local industries are hand made art pieces of traditional pottery and weaving, but mostly it is renowned for woodcarving. In the main town square one can still see a five-storied pagoda, with all its original beauty, intricately covered with woodcarving and sculpting that was not destroyed by the huge earthquake in 1934.

Places outside of Kathmandu

Pokhara: This beautiful little town is nestled at the foot of the Himalayan mountain range, the starting place for many trekking and rafting adventures. It is bordered by mountains on one side and the scenic Phewa Lake on the other.Situated 200km West of Kathmandu, it is only 40km away from the Himalayan mountains which gives one a sense of their tremendous size. You can hardly imagine what they may look like when you stand at their feet. The valley itself is breath with its stark views, lush scenery, and blooming flowers giving one an ambience of magic.

Lumbini: The birthplace of Siddhartha Gautam, the shakya prince, known as Shakyamuni Buddha. Lumbini is the pilgrimage destination for many who wish to see the birthplace of the Buddha. There is a limestone pillar marking the exact locationthat was erected by the emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BC. A sacred garden preserving all the holy landmarks, surrounds this sight. Here one can visit various different temples that have been established to represent the different sects of Buddhism throughout Asia’s Buddhist countries.

Janakpur: This religious geographical region was famed by an ancient king, Janak who gave birth to Sita the goddess consort to the Hindu god Ram. This district is said to have 'the aroma of India' since it was built up like an ancient Indian city. The maintemple built with great ceremony in honor of Sita is elaborately made of marble and worth more than a mere glance. This place from olden times becomes the stage for epic poems of Sita and Ram, these gods play an active part in Hindu culture. Janakpur is also called Mithila, famed for its Mithila art. Simple pictures made like a motif, these skills have been handed down from one generation to the next till the present day and have been renowned the world over.
